You aren’t officially divorced until the judge signs the Judgment of Divorce document.
The way this will work is that you and your spouse will negotiate the details (or a trial will be held if you can’t come to terms with each other) and both parties will sign on to a Stipulation of Settlement.
Then both sets of attorneys provide the Stipulation of Settlement and all the other necessary documentation to the court.
And then you wait, sometimes as long as six months, until you receive your signed Judgment of Divorce.
Only then are you legally divorced in the State of New York.
